SILKE. SUKKER. SAND
TicketsA silkworm’s cocoon consists of a single thread, which is about a kilometer long.
In the 19th century, the production of sugar in the Caribbean was linked to the sale of weapons.
Every time you take your phone out of your pocket, you hold a small pile of sand in your hand.
SILKE. SUKKER. SAND is a newly composed vocal piece by Marie Dahl Assembly with five singers from the renowned and innovative Danish ensemble Ars Nova on stage. A piece in three movements composed by three international composers: Tiange Zhou (China), Blasio Kavuma (Great Britain) and Arnannguaq Gerstrøm (Greenland), tied together in an electronic sound universe. The three movements take a starting point in each their material – silk, sugar and sand – and examine the history, materiality and nature behind the raw materials that have shaped the development of our world. This is done through a visual journey through three sensual tableaux of scenographic costumes and lights.
SILKE. SUKKER. SAND is the story of three materials that have left deep traces in our culture and everyday life. About the wounds of colonialism, industrialization and the destruction of ecosystems that are still open, yet do not whet our appetite. About the desire for luxury and pleasure, money, monopolies and power. About the beauty and inequality, wealth and poverty they have coursed.
The libretto and staging are created by director Marie Dahl, who after many years of close collaboration with Kirsten Dehlholm and the legendary performing arts company Hotel Pro Forma has now created her first of several independent pieces with Marie Dahl Assembly.
