I pulled up the shirt, waited for the butterflies under the skin, waited to hear a heart beating, rocked by my bones, fed by my blood. The machine emitted a murmur, a wind; the sound of my pelvis and from the wind your heart galloped at full speed. The heart of a bunny, a piglet, a grasshopper, a tiny machine, I feared could stop beating any second.

ANIMAL is a mother’s internal conversation with her child. A story about choosing to keep a child with Downs syndrom, “a useless being” in a world obsessed with efficiency and growth. A story about a woman who with birth and parenthood experience the cruelty of both humans and nature roll her over. She is overwhelmed by the sorrow and the fears of losing an irreplaceable, understated world and openly asks: Who and what, in our current society, owns the right to protection?

ANIMAL is a both brutal and poetic radicalization piece, a collective mourning ritual, a mothers revival created by the German director Lara Magdalena Tacke on the grounds of acclaimed debut novel by Alexandra Molthe Johansen. The story is told by an actor and three classical singers with music by composer Kirstine Fogh Vindelev. Through a swarm of disharmony, chaos, gasping, screams and melodic stanzas the music examines the sound of the human being going though birth, caretaking, desperation and thankfulness.
