THE GIRL WITH THE HURRICANE BRAIN
In a visual universe made up of black sand, dripping oils and scoby with nine musicians and four singers, a little kitchen develeps into a hurricane. THE GIRL WITH THE HURRICANE BRAIN is a new opera by the ensemble Lydenskab known for their explorative and experimenting approach to classical music.
We start in the morning. Food is on the table. A family is ready to enjoy a cozy meal together. Until someone mentions the forbidden subject. The subject that divides the family members and makes them seem as if they were born on different planets. The subject of the climate. The daughter’s doomsday fear hammers against her uncomprehending parents, while a weather reporter on morning TV desperately tries to get through with his alarming future prophecy about global chance. Who protects who? And who is to say who is accountable?
THE GIRL WITH THE HURRICAN BRAIN displays our lack of language for the heavy feelings connected to living in a world undergoing extreme change. The opera is created by the nine musicians making up the ensemble Lydenskab, who are on stage throughout the performance. It is created together with a team of highly regarded international artists:
Laura Bowler (Composer and member of Lydenskab), Sam Redway (Librettist), Jude Christian (Director), Laura Rathschau (Set and costume designer), Zoë Palmer (Dramaturg) and is performed by nine musicians, four singers and a conductor together with electronic elements.
BEHIND THE CREATION OF THE OPERA
The opera hands over the microphone to a generation growing up with climate change as an underlying theme for its future. The opera is created with inspiration from workshops with young people in both Denmark, Great Britain, India and Nigeria about their thoughts on climate change.
In connection to the theme, the creative team explores a sustainable and circular production method. The costumes and the set design are created from degradable materials making them part of the orbit of nature. They collaborate with the Danish organization Bæredygtigt Kulturliv NU (Sustainable Culture Life NOW).
The opera is created by Lydenskab and co-produced by Sort/Hvid and Copenhagen Opera Festival.
